History

Welcome to the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County! We currently are comprised of four Clubhouses located in Carpinteria, Westside Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Lompoc, a 55 acre residential camp, and an Administrative office. The first Boys and Girls Club opened it's doors on the Westside in 1945. It moved to it's present location at 632 E. Canon Perdido in 1949. Progressively, new branches opened in Goleta (1952), Westside (1962), Carpinteria (1967), Lompoc (1988), and Camp Whittier (1988). In 2001 the United Boys and Girls Clubs merged as one corporation, however the Cannon Perdido location remains independent.

Today the United Boys and Girls Clubs serve five communities throughout Santa Barbara County, helping over 8,400 youth. Many kids come to the Clubs voluntarily to be with friends, participate in sports, and engage in educational activities. Children may be referred to the Clubs by schools, counselors, or other agencies as a means to gain a positive experience socially, educationally, physically, and emotionally under guidance of caring adults.

Operations

Boys & Girls Clubs are in operation year-round, including all day during the summer months and school holidays. Membership dues are $20 a year per child, however no child is ever denied because of financial reasons.

Community Partners

Campfire USA
Camp Fire USA is one of the nation’s leading not-for-profit youth development organizations. The Boys & Girls Club of Lompoc has been fortunate enough to partner with the organization. Though the main camp is in Arroyo Grande, the group of approximately 15 members meets locally at the club every Thursday. The group participates in community service activities such as community trash clean-ups. This partnership has been a great experience for the kids.

Cal-SOAP
Cal-SOAP, or California Student Opportunity and Access Program, works to increase the number of students attending college by ensuring that they have the necessary information and preparation to achieve success. Though it is a statewide program, the Santa Barbara sector serves over 9,000 students annually. Volunteers from the program visiting the Clubs on a weekly basis help kids with their homework and tutor in challenging subjects. They have been a great asset in helping members reach their dreams of academic success.

Drop In Program

Our drop-in program is offered to all youth ages 5 to 18, from 1 to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Boys & Girls Clubs provide services that aim to engage all youth in recreational and social activities, and are centered around having a place for young people to go to enjoy their free time.

Not only are Clubs a valuable after school option for many working families, they are an invaluable opportunity for young people to have a place of their own to come to whenever they have free time. Our hours of service are designed to accommodate after school, evening, and weekend times when kids want to attend.

Licensed Day Care

We have four year-round licensed day cares, and offer transportation from local schools.

Year-round state-licensed childcare is available for boys and girls from kindergarten through grade six, and CHP-certified transportation from local schools. Our Goleta facility hosts a program onsite and at the UCSB campus. The Lompoc facility hosts a pre-school program in addition to the K–6 grade program, serving children aged 3 to 5. Santa Barbara Clubhouse on West Anapamu Street has a fully licensed program.

The Clubs’ drop-in policy allows easy access for care as needed, and our non-traditional hours accommodate families with varied work schedules.

Field trips, homework and tutoring, the Ladders for Success Reading Program, and Parent Clubs—all serve as a positive link between parents, children and staff. A broad range of activities encourages children to find areas that match their skills and interests.

Boys & Girls Clubs are designed so children can “grow-up” in the Club, and many families relish the fact that their child can remain in one environment. Families with multiple children are comforted to have siblings in the same location.

Core Program Areas

Programs are consistently available on a daily and evening basis, and during school breaks, catering to a population that is in need of care during non-traditional hours. A variety of wholesome, adult-guided activities and services are provided free or at very low cost.

We serve an additional 13,000 youth through a sports program, teen activities, and youth oriented community events and activities. Friday Late Nights from 8-11 p.m. serves 300 teens per week offering movies, dances, talent shows, music, and sports tournaments.

Testimonials

1950s
“I joined the Boys & Girls Club in 1950 and have been actively involved ever since. My greatest memory from the club is the strong moral values that I gained and having a place to go to get off the streets.”
—Wendell Smith

1960s
“I have been a member of the Boys & Girls Club ever since the 5th grade. It was a second home for my brothers and me to go and get homework done and hang out with friends. I really value the long lasting friendships and relationships with mentors.”
—Jimmy Smit

“I became a member of the Boys & Girls Club in Goleta when I was in Junior High School in approximately 1964.  I remember the sports teams I was a part of the most and just dropping in on the weekends.  I learned tolerance and experienced diversity.”
—Paul Menzel

“I became involved with the Club in 1968. Being selected the Boy of the Year in 1976 is my greatest memory of accomplishment. My experience there taught me the importance of leadership, diversity and inclusion.”
—Pat DeReuda

1970s
“I have been a member since the 2nd grade and I am still involved with the club. I loved playing baseball, basketball, flag football, and lots of other activities. I look at the activities my kids are involved in today and compare them to my experience. The Boys & Girls Club is bar none the best, nothing to compare it to. The most valuable lessons that I gained were dealing with diverse people, team work, and respecting authority.”
—Jerry Karczewski

“I joined the club when I was 8 or 9 through junior high. I participated in baseball, basketball, and football. Once high school began I continued at the Club as a referee, camp counselor, and frequent visitor.  I did some refereeing and coaching from time to time thereafter. Without a doubt, my greatest memory is playing traveling team and all star basketball. I have great friends today from that very team. I gained the values of goal setting, responsibility, dedication, and teamwork.”
—Marc Gamberdella

1990s
“I have been coming here since freshman year. It has always been a place where I can come and hang out and do my homework. I was youth of the year in 2003. I graduated last year and now I work at the club. I enjoy being around the kids.”
—Pablo Avila
