Boys & Girls Club Youths of the Year 2012
Lompoc, CA (January 6, 2011) -- The United Boys & Girls Clubs of Lompoc announced their selections for the Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year 2012. Recipients Nathaniel Taylor and Melanie Acton are both active with the clubhouse and their community. They will now go on to compete with other candidates within the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara for regional recognition and scholarships.
Nathaniel Taylor, 16, attends Lompoc High School and has completed the Club’s Teen Outreach Program (TOP), Passport to Manhood, and CareerLaunch, a six week National Boys & Girls Club program which helps build job search abilities and job readiness skill sets. He is involved with the Lompoc Police Explorer Group and plays Junior Varsity basketball for Lompoc High School.
Melanie Acton, 16, attends Lompoc High School and has completed TOP and CareerLaunch programs as well. Melanie is part of the mentoring initiative at the Clubhouse and she serves a regular weekly schedule as a peer mentor. She is also a member of the organizational committee for this year’s CareerLaunch program, and a current member of Keystone, which focus on developing leadership and community service.
Mentoring and volunteerism are key components to qualification for the Youth of the Year program and other national recognition awards. Mentoring is one of the most requested services provided through the United Boys and Girls Clubs. There is a special need for adult male mentors, especially minority males, to help lead by example and guide our youth through the club programs. If you would like to be involved as a volunteer or mentor, please contact Rachel Wolpo, Volunteer Recruiter at (805) 736-4978 ext. 210 or email lompocvolunteer@sbceo.org for more information.
